What is home for you?
What is home for you? Is it a place from long ago, or perhaps your current house? Is it a person who makes you feel safe? Is it being surrounded by books and cats? Having moved around so much, for me ‘home’ is less anchored in place, and more focused on people. If I have Lewis, Heather, and our cats, I can be at home. It’s that sense of relaxation, of being able to put on the comfy clothes and chill with a cup of tea. As a person of faith, I think that sense of at-home-ness with God is something wonderful too. It’s true that God is mighty, powerful and awesome (to ‘fear’ the Lord is to be aware of God’s overwhelming ‘God-ness’!), but we can also cultivate a sense of intimacy. One of the great joys of prayer is that you can tell God literally anything. There’s no emotion too big, no experience too strange, no thought too personal, that cannot be shared with God. I wonder if this resonates with you, or perhaps feels a little alien. But prayer can be a haven of home-ness, and it’s a wonderful thing to lean on when life gets a bit overwhelming. As the hymn encourages us, ‘take it to the Lord in prayer’!
