Rector's Post-Election Letter
Dear Holy Comforter Family:
Many are feeling a wide range of emotions after election day.
This is perfectly normal.
Elation, deflation, anger, happiness, hope, despair, confusion, sadness, hurt.
And some may feel not much at all through indifference or numbness.
It’s all okay.
It’s all valid.
It is the fruit of a contentious season, and that contention may not end in the world anytime soon.
A more productive hope may be to seek to diminish that contention in ourselves.
Before moving forward, I encourage all of us to take a deep breath.
(You can even do that right now…)
Then acknowledge, that regardless of the outcome,
no matter who won or lost in each and every contest…
OUR work remains the same.
I believe that work is rooted in our Baptismal Covenant,
and THAT hasn’t changed since November 5.
We are called, (and we refresh these vows, several times each year):
- To continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread
- To persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever we fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord
- To proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ
- To seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves
- To strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being
Prayers
To all of these we take an oath, but we also strive for each of them… with God’s help.
We keep doing these, as best we can,
to continue to bring the love of Jesus into the world;
however we can, wherever we can, whenever we can.
We are not alone. God is with us.
And the image of God resides in EACH of us.
In those with whom we agree, and in those whom we don’t.
Please pray for our leaders, and for our nation.
Please be gentle with yourself. Please be gentle with each other.
Feel what you feel… honor that. And leave space for others to feel what they feel.
Let it be.
In the end, let us remember that God reigns, and that Love will win.
We each have our work to do.
And God will help you to do it.
“Live out your baptism.”
Grace and Peace,
Fr Greg
