Do you see God in the moment?
For me it’s sometimes hard to be aware of God in the day to day. But when I look back, then it is often much clearer. With a little perspective, I can reflect back and see that God was there in the people, in the constant presence of love, even there in tears and anxiety. God was present through all of it. Psalm 23 talks of the valley of the shadow, and the shadow is understood as the dark times of sorrow and death, but I think it can also be the shadow of when we struggle to feel or see God’s presence. These times might occur in different phases of our lives, but they come for all of us. Sometimes it just feels like a distance. But after the valley of shadow comes the assurance: ‘you are with me’. This is what faith is, I think, to hold onto that hope of God’s persistent presence, even when we can’t feel it. There’s a song I heard years ago that said “I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining. I believe in love even when I can’t feel it. I believe in God even when God is silent.” The lyrics come from words found scratched into the wall of a concentration camp in Cologne. This is God with us. Faith in the midst of darkness. So know that wherever you are, God is with you too.
